After preparing the surface with a layer of Gesso, colour and decorate the hats using Posca markers. Add a pair of googly eyes, a smile, rosy cheeks and a sparkling pompom to bring these cute decorations to life. This simple, creative activity lets your kids play with colours, patterns and expressions to make unique hanging ornaments.
How to make this craft step-by-step:
Step 1: prepare the hat area with Gesso
Use a brush to apply a layer of Gesso paint to the top part of the wooden disc, where the hat will be drawn. Follow a slightly rounded shape to form the base of the hat, leaving the lower part of the disc visible to create the face.
Why apply Gesso before painting with Posca markers?
Gesso creates a waterproof base on the wood. This step is important because it stops the Posca marker paint from bleeding or soaking into the wood fibres. Once the base is dry, you can layer different colours and draw sharper, clearer patterns.
Step 2: Colour the hats
Cover the white paint with a coloured acrylic marker.
Step 3: Decorate the hats
Use acrylic markers in different colours to draw patterns on the hats: dots, lines, zigzags, flowers and geometric shapes.
Step 4: Bring the characters to life
Stick two 12 mm googly eyes on each wooden disc, then draw a smile with a black acrylic marker and add small pink cheeks.
Step 5: Add the hangers
Thread a gold string through the hole in each wooden disc, then tie the ends to make a loop for hanging the decorations.
Step 6: Finish the Christmas decorations
Stick a glittery metallic pompom on top of each hat for a festive touch.
The little wooden characters are ready to hang on the Christmas tree!
